What is Bakelite & Catalin?
The complete UK guide to Bakelite and Catalin prayer beads — history, how they differ, why collectors love them, and how to identify genuine pieces.
Bakelite & Catalin — The Short Answer
Bakelite and Catalin are both phenolic resins — early synthetic plastics developed in the early 20th century — that became widely used for making prayer beads (tasbih) due to their exceptional durability, depth of colour, and satisfying weight. While often grouped together, they are distinct materials with different properties, manufacturing processes and collector characteristics.
At Luxury R Visible, we carry an extensive range of Bakelite and Catalin prayer beads — handcrafted by our master artisans using traditional methods. These materials sit just below Faturan in the hierarchy of tasbih collecting, and genuine vintage pieces are increasingly prized worldwide.
The History of Bakelite & Catalin
Bakelite was invented in 1907 by Belgian-American chemist Leo Baekeland — the world's first truly synthetic plastic. Formed by combining phenol and formaldehyde under heat and pressure, it produced a hard, heat-resistant, electrically non-conductive material that could be moulded into almost any shape.
In the 1920s and 1930s, Bakelite became one of the most widely used materials in the world — used in everything from telephones and radios to jewellery and prayer beads. Its combination of durability, warmth and rich colour made it an immediate favourite among tasbih craftsmen.
Catalin is a refined cast version of phenolic resin, developed slightly later. Unlike moulded Bakelite, Catalin was cast in liquid form and allowed to polymerise slowly — producing a material with far greater colour clarity, translucency and depth. Catalin is harder to produce, more prone to cracking during manufacture, and generally considered superior to standard Bakelite for prayer beads.
"The colours in a genuine Catalin set — especially the deep greens, ambers and reds — have a depth and translucency that no modern plastic has ever truly replicated."
Bakelite vs Catalin vs Faturan — Understanding the Differences
These three materials are frequently confused. Understanding the differences helps collectors make informed choices and identify genuine pieces.

Why Bakelite & Catalin Make
Exceptional Prayer Beads
Despite being over a century old in their original form, Bakelite and Catalin remain among the most popular materials for serious tasbih collectors and daily users. Here's why.
The Colours
Bakelite and Catalin were produced in an extraordinary range of colours — deep cherry red, forest green, butterscotch amber, black, tortoiseshell, marbled and more. Catalin in particular develops colours with a depth and translucency that appears almost illuminated when held to light — something no modern acrylic achieves.
The Feel
Both materials have a warmth and smoothness in the hand that users find deeply satisfying for daily dhikr and prayer counting. Unlike glass or metal, they respond to body heat and feel natural rather than cold.
The Durability
Properly cared for, Bakelite and Catalin prayer beads last for generations. Unlike modern acrylics which can yellow, fade or become brittle, phenolic resins remain stable over decades — often improving in appearance with age and use.
The Value
Genuine vintage Bakelite and Catalin pieces are increasingly sought after by collectors worldwide. As supply of vintage material diminishes, prices for well-preserved pieces continue to rise. Our pieces are crafted using traditional phenolic resin methods that honour this heritage.
How to Care for Bakelite & Catalin Beads
- Keep away from prolonged direct sunlight — UV exposure can cause colour fading or surface oxidation over time
- Avoid harsh chemicals, bleach, perfumes and acetone — these will damage the surface permanently
- Clean gently with a soft dry cloth — never submerge in water or use abrasive cleaners
- If oxidation occurs (surface becomes dull or yellowed), a gentle polish with Brasso or Simichrome on a soft cloth can restore lustre — test on a hidden area first
- Store in a soft cloth pouch away from other jewellery to prevent scratching
- The natural oils from regular handling are beneficial — daily use develops a beautiful patina
Bakelite vs Catalin —
Which is Right for You?
Both are exceptional materials — but they suit different collectors and uses. Here's how to choose.
Bakelite
Bakelite is the more widely available of the two — making it an excellent entry point for collectors and a reliable choice for daily use. The colours tend to be more opaque and solid, with a satisfying weight and warmth that makes it ideal for dhikr and meditation.
Bakelite is generally more affordable than Catalin or Faturan while still offering exceptional quality that far surpasses modern acrylic alternatives.

- WeightMedium to heavy
- Best forDaily use & first collectors

Catalin
Catalin is considered the superior material — cast rather than moulded, producing colours with remarkable depth, translucency and variation. No two Catalin sets are identical, and the most prized colours — deep greens, rich ambers, swirled marbles — command significant premiums.
If you are looking for a piece that is both beautiful and an investment, Catalin is the material collectors consistently return to.

The Properties of
Bakelite & Catalin
Six qualities that make these century-old materials still the choice of serious tasbih collectors worldwide.
Rich Colour Depth
Catalin and Bakelite produce colours with a warmth and depth no modern acrylic achieves — from deep cherry reds to translucent ambers and swirled marbles.
Satisfying Weight
The substantial weight of phenolic resin makes it ideal for prayer counting — reassuring in the hand without being heavy or tiring to use.
Natural Warmth
Both materials have excellent warmth to the touch — far superior to glass, metal or modern acrylic for daily use in dhikr and meditation.
Extraordinary Durability
Properly cared for, Bakelite and Catalin last for generations. Unlike modern acrylics, phenolic resins remain stable over decades — often improving with age.
Develops with Use
Like all great natural and heritage materials, Bakelite and Catalin develop a rich patina through handling — becoming more beautiful and personal over time.
Investment Value
Genuine vintage Bakelite and Catalin pieces are increasingly sought after. Supply of authentic vintage material diminishes each year — making well-preserved pieces more valuable.

How to Identify Genuine Bakelite & Catalin
-
1The Scent TestRub vigorously with your thumb. Genuine phenolic resin produces a distinctive mild chemical or phenolic scent. Modern acrylic produces no scent.
-
2The Hot Water TestBriefly run the bead under warm water and smell immediately. Genuine Bakelite produces a stronger phenolic scent when warmed.
-
3The Weight TestGenuine Bakelite and Catalin have a substantial weight. Modern acrylic copies are noticeably lighter.
-
4The Light TestHold to light — Catalin shows translucent depth and colour variation. Acrylic appears perfectly uniform and flat.
