Softer or more common stones — howlite, obsidian, certain quartzes — are often tumbled. Raw chips and fragments are placed inside rotating barrels with progressively finer abrasive grit, moving through coarse to medium to fine stages over several days. The friction mimics, in compressed time, the natural rounding that rivers produce over centuries. What emerges are smooth, organic spheres with a pleasing irregularity that many find deeply tactile and grounding.

Precision Sphere Cutting

Premium materials — lapis lazuli, high-grade amethyst, turquoise — are worked on a sphere-cutting machine. The rough is first sawn into approximate cubes, then mounted and rotated against a curved grinding wheel. The cutter repeatedly repositions the stone, grinding away excess material from every axis until a true sphere forms. This requires patience and skill; rushing the process produces an oval rather than a sphere, and inconsistency in bead diameter is immediately felt during counting. Why Is Drilling One of the Most Critical Steps?

Once shaped, each bead must be drilled — a step that separates a functional prayer bead from a decorative sphere. A fine channel is bored through the centre of each bead using a diamond-tipped drill bit, typically running from 0.8mm to 1.5mm in diameter depending on the cord or wire that will pass through it.

The challenge here is significant. Certain gemstones, particularly those with natural inclusions or fine layering, can fracture under the vibration of the drill if the craftsperson applies uneven pressure. Lapis lazuli, prized for its deep blue and golden pyrite flecks, is particularly demanding — its composite mineral structure means the drill must move slowly, with cooling water applied continuously to prevent heat stress.

The bead is typically drilled halfway from one side, then the piece is flipped and drilled from the opposite side to meet in the middle. This technique minimises surface chipping at the exit point of the drill. A clean, centred, smooth-channelled hole is the mark of a properly made bead — you feel it immediately in the way the cord moves freely and the bead sits true.

What Happens During the Polishing Stage?

After drilling, beads are polished — often the most transformative moment of the entire process. Raw stone that appeared dull and unremarkable under workshop lights reveals its true colour and lustre under the polishing wheel. This is why gemstone professionals often say that polishing does not change the stone; it reveals what was always there.

Polishing is carried out in multiple grits: coarser abrasives remove surface scratches from the shaping stage, while progressively finer compounds — down to cerium oxide or diamond paste — produce the glassy, light-catching finish associated with premium tasbih and gemstone jewellery. The depth of polish directly affects the visual vibrancy of the final piece. A tasbih strung from dull, under-polished beads and one strung from mirror-finished beads of the same stone are almost unrecognisable as relatives.

Some stones are intentionally left with a matte or satin finish — this is an aesthetic choice rather than a shortcut. Matte onyx, for instance, carries a quiet, contemplative quality that suits certain spiritual practices beautifully.

Stringing is where the cultural and spiritual tradition asserts itself most directly. The count of beads is not arbitrary — it carries centuries of theological and ritual meaning.
