A single bead in a tasbih may have begun its life hundreds of metres underground, crystallising over millions of years before any human hand ever touched it.

So how are prayer beads actually made? In short: raw gemstone rock is sourced from the earth, cut into rough chunks, shaped into spheres, drilled, polished and then hand-strung — bead by bead — into a finished strand. Where Does It Begin? Sourcing the Right Gemstone

Every prayer bead strand begins not at a workbench but in the earth itself. Gemstones used in quality tasbih production are sourced from mines across the world — amethyst from Brazil and Zambia, lapis lazuli from the ancient mines of Badakhshan in Afghanistan (the same deposits that supplied ancient Egypt), turquoise from Iran and the American Southwest, onyx from Pakistan and India, and rose quartz from Madagascar.

The selection of rough stone is the first moment of craft judgement. Skilled gem buyers assess the rock for colour consistency, structural integrity and the absence of deep fracture lines that would cause a bead to crack under drilling. A piece of rough amethyst that looks breathtaking in a market can harbour internal fissures invisible to the untrained eye — fissures that only reveal themselves when the lapidary's blade meets the stone.

Hardness matters enormously here. Gemstones are rated on the Mohs scale from 1 (softest, like talc) to 10 (hardest, like diamond). Most prayer bead gemstones — including amethyst, citrine and rose quartz — sit at around 7 on the Mohs scale, meaning they are hard enough to withstand daily handling but require diamond-tipped tools to shape. Softer stones like malachite (around 3.5–4) demand a far more delicate hand.

How Is a Gemstone Shaped Into a Perfect Sphere?

Once suitable rough material is selected, it is cut into workable chunks and handed to a lapidary — the craftsperson whose entire discipline is the shaping, grinding and polishing of stone. The process of creating a perfectly round bead is known as sphere cutting, and it is considerably more demanding than it sounds.

Step 1: Rough Shaping

The rough gemstone is first cut into smaller cubes or blocks using a diamond saw — a saw with a blade edged in industrial diamond particles, the only material hard enough to cut most gemstones cleanly. These cubes are then ground down on a coarse grinding wheel, working the sharp corners away until a rough sphere emerges. This stage is more about removing what does not belong than creating what does.

Step 2: Sphere Grinding

The rough sphere is then fed into a specialised sphere-grinding machine — two cupped grinding wheels set at opposite angles — and the stone rotates between them continuously, being slowly ground into a more perfect globe. This step can be repeated through progressively finer grits of abrasive, each pass removing smaller and smaller amounts of material, refining the shape with increasing precision. For high-quality tesbih beads, this process may pass through four or five different grit grades.

Step 3: Drilling

\n

Drilling the central hole is a critical and delicate operation. Diamond-tipped drill bits are used, and the bead is typically drilled from both ends toward the middle to ensure the hole is centred and the bead does not crack under the pressure of drilling from one side alone. The diameter of the hole must be large enough for the stringing cord or wire to pass through comfortably, but not so large that the bead loses structural integrity. A misaligned hole or a crack caused by too much drilling pressure means the bead is lost — started again from scratch.

Step 4: Polishing

\n

The final shaping stage is polishing, and this is where a good gemstone bead becomes a beautiful one. The beads are moved through progressively finer polishing compounds — often cerium oxide or aluminium oxide paste — on a felt or leather wheel. It is during polishing that the stone's inner character is finally revealed: the deep violet saturation of amethyst, the silky silver flash of labradorite, the warm honey tones of tiger's eye. This is the moment the stone begins to feel alive.

What Makes a Tasbih Different From a Mala or Komboli?

Once the beads are polished and drilled, the stringing process begins — and this is where the spiritual tradition of each culture shapes the finished object in specific, meaningful ways.

A tasbih (also written as tasbeeh or tesbih depending on transliteration) is an Islamic prayer strand, most commonly comprising 33, 66 or 99 beads — reflecting the 99 names of Allah in Islamic tradition. The strand includes a larger or differently shaped separator bead (often called the imam bead) and typically finishes with a tassel or pendant. The beads are strung with intention: each one a marker for a repetition of dhikr, the practice of mindful remembrance. A mala, used in Hindu and Buddhist traditions, typically carries 108 beads — a number considered sacred across several dharmic traditions, linked to the 108 Upanishads, the 108 sacred sites of India and the relationship between the diameter of the sun and its distance from the earth. The mala includes a guru bead at which the practitioner pauses and reflects before reversing direction for another round of mantra. The tactile, meditative purpose is the same as a tasbih, though the count and the spiritual context differ.

A komboli — the Greek worry bead strand — is typically shorter, with an odd number of beads, and is not used for counting prayers but rather for the physical rhythm of passing beads through the fingers, a practice known to reduce stress and encourage focus. The komboli's design is intentionally informal, its loop left open or loosely tied.

In all cases, the craft of the individual bead is identical. What differs is the intention held during stringing, the bead count, and the cultural and spiritual tradition into which the finished piece is received.
