Amber Guide
The complete UK guide to Baltic and Dominican Amber prayer beads — what makes them different, why they are prized worldwide, and how to identify genuine amber.
Amber Prayer Beads — The Short Answer
Baltic and Dominican Amber are both genuine fossilised tree resins — millions of years old — used to create some of the most beautiful and spiritually significant prayer beads in the world. Formed from the resin of ancient trees, amber is one of nature's most extraordinary materials — warm to the touch, light in weight, and carrying within it millions of years of natural history.
At Luxury R Visible, we stock genuine Baltic and Dominican Amber prayer beads sourced directly through our master craftsmen — not imitation amber, not pressed amber, but the real thing. Each set is a piece of natural history you can hold in your hands.
What is Amber?
Amber is not a stone, a mineral or a synthetic material. It is fossilised tree resin — the hardened sap of ancient trees that lived tens of millions of years ago. Over millions of years, this resin underwent a process of polymerisation and fossilisation, transforming into the hard, translucent material we know as amber today.
The oldest amber deposits date back over 320 million years, though the most prized amber for jewellery and prayer beads — Baltic Amber — comes from trees that lived approximately 44 million years ago. Dominican Amber, from the Caribbean, is younger at around 15–45 million years old, but is prized for its exceptional clarity and frequent inclusions.
Amber has been used by humans for tens of thousands of years — as jewellery, as medicine, as currency, and as objects of spiritual significance. For prayer bead collectors and users, amber holds a unique place — it is warm, light, beautiful, and carries within it a connection to the deep history of the natural world.
"To hold a piece of genuine Baltic Amber is to hold something formed before humans walked the earth — a fragment of deep time, warm in your hand and beautiful in the light."
Baltic Amber vs Dominican Amber —
Understanding the Difference
The two most sought-after amber varieties for prayer beads are Baltic and Dominican. While both are genuine fossilised amber, they differ significantly in origin, appearance, and collector characteristics.

Why Amber Makes
Exceptional Prayer Beads
The Warmth
Amber has remarkable warmth to the touch — it heats almost immediately when held, making it one of the most comfortable and pleasing materials for extended prayer and dhikr. This quality has made it beloved for centuries across cultures and faiths.
The Weight
Genuine amber is remarkably light — lighter than most resins and far lighter than stone or glass. This makes amber prayer beads exceptionally comfortable for long periods of use — the beads move through the fingers with a natural ease that heavier materials cannot achieve.
The Inclusions
One of amber's most extraordinary features is its ability to preserve organic material from millions of years ago. Inclusions — trapped insects, plant fragments, air bubbles — make every amber piece unique. A prayer bead containing a perfectly preserved prehistoric insect is not just beautiful — it is a scientific marvel.
The Colour
Amber ranges from pale straw yellow through rich honey, cognac and cherry tones to the extraordinarily rare blue and green amber found exclusively in Dominican deposits. Each colour has its own beauty and collector following.
How to Care for Amber Beads
- Keep away from direct sunlight for extended periods — UV exposure can cause amber to darken or crack over time
- Avoid all chemicals — perfume, hairspray, cleaning products and even hand cream can damage the surface
- Clean only with a soft dry cloth — never use water, ultrasonic cleaners or steam
- Amber is relatively soft (2.5 on the Mohs scale) — store separately from harder materials that could scratch it
- Avoid extreme temperature changes — do not leave in a hot car or near heat sources
- The natural oils from regular handling are beneficial — daily use develops a warm, pleasing patina
Baltic vs Dominican —
Which is Right for You?
Both are genuine amber — but they suit different collectors and purposes. Here's how to choose.
Baltic Amber
Baltic Amber is the most widely recognised and traded amber in the world — the benchmark against which all other amber is measured. Found along the shores of the Baltic Sea, particularly in Poland, Lithuania and Russia, it has been prized for over 10,000 years.
For prayer bead collectors, Baltic Amber offers the widest range of colours and styles — from opaque honey yellow to rich translucent cognac — at a more accessible price point than Dominican.
- ClarityOpaque to translucent
- Colour rangeHoney, cognac, cherry
- Best forDaily use & first collectors
- Price rangeMid to high range
Dominican Amber
Dominican Amber is rarer than Baltic and generally commands higher prices — particularly pieces with inclusions or the extraordinary blue and green fluorescent colours unique to Dominican deposits. Found in the Dominican Republic, it is typically younger than Baltic Amber but often of greater clarity.
For the serious collector, Dominican Amber — particularly blue Dominican or pieces with prehistoric inclusions — represents one of the most extraordinary natural materials available for prayer beads.
- ClarityHighly transparent
- Colour rangeYellow, orange, rare blue & green
- Best forSerious collectors & gifts
- Price rangeHigh to premium range
The Properties of
Genuine Amber
Six qualities that make amber one of the most prized materials for prayer beads worldwide.
Natural Warmth
Amber warms almost instantly in the hand — one of the most comfortable and pleasing materials for extended prayer and dhikr. A quality prized for centuries across faiths and cultures.
Exceptional Lightness
Genuine amber is remarkably light — making it uniquely comfortable for long periods of use. The beads move through the fingers with a natural ease that heavier materials cannot replicate.
Prehistoric Inclusions
Many amber pieces contain trapped organic material from millions of years ago — insects, plant fragments, air bubbles. Each inclusion makes the piece truly one of a kind.
Extraordinary Colour
From pale straw to deep cherry, and the extraordinary blue and green of Dominican amber — the colour range is unlike any other natural material.
Millions of Years Old
Baltic Amber is approximately 44 million years old. Every bead is a fragment of deep geological time — a connection to the ancient world impossible to replicate.
Investment Value
Quality amber — particularly Dominican and inclusion pieces — continues to appreciate in value. As supply diminishes, genuine amber becomes increasingly rare and sought after.
How to Identify
Genuine Amber
The amber market contains significant quantities of imitation amber — plastic, glass, and pressed amber (small fragments compressed together) all sold as genuine. Here's how to tell the difference.
-
1The Salt Water TestGenuine amber floats in saturated salt water (1 cup salt per 2 cups water). Plastic, glass and most imitations sink. This is the most reliable home test.
-
2The UV Light TestUnder UV light, genuine amber fluoresces — usually blue or blue-green. Baltic Amber shows mild fluorescence; Dominican Amber shows strong, vivid blue fluorescence. Plastic shows little or no fluorescence.
-
3The Warmth TestGenuine amber warms almost instantly in the hand. Glass remains cool. Most plastics warm more slowly than amber and feel different to the touch.
-
4The Weight TestGenuine amber is very light — lighter than most resins and far lighter than glass. If amber beads feel heavy, treat with caution.
-
5The InclusionsGenuine inclusions in amber look natural and three-dimensional — not flat or photographic. Be wary of suspiciously perfect or clearly decorative inclusions, which may indicate imitation.
Caring for Your Amber Beads
- Keep away from prolonged direct sunlight — UV can cause darkening or surface cracking
- Avoid all chemicals — perfume, hairspray and hand cream will damage the surface
- Clean only with a soft dry cloth — never use water or ultrasonic cleaners
- Store separately from harder materials that could scratch the surface
- Avoid extreme heat — never leave in a hot car or near radiators
- Regular handling is beneficial — daily use develops a beautiful patina
- If the surface becomes dull, a tiny amount of olive oil on a soft cloth can restore lustre — buff away completely after
