Faturan vs Bakelite —
What's the Real Difference?

By Luxury R Visible  ◆  Material Guides  ◆  6 min read

It is one of the most common questions we receive at Luxury R Visible — and one of the most important if you are serious about buying prayer beads. Faturan and Bakelite are both phenolic resins, both have rich histories in tasbih making, and both are prized by collectors. But they are not the same material, and the differences matter enormously when choosing a piece for daily use.

This guide settles the debate with honest, practical information based on decades of direct experience working with Faturan and Bakelite prayer beads.

Origins — Where Each
Material Comes From

Faturan is the older and rarer of the two. It is a phenolic resin developed and refined over centuries of Ottoman craftsmanship — worked by hand by master artisans, not cast in moulds. The name comes from Arabic and Turkish tradition, and true vintage Faturan has not been commercially produced since the early-to-mid 20th century. What LRV offers through our Faturan collection is handcrafted using traditional methods that produce the closest available result to the legendary original.

Bakelite was invented in 1907 by Leo Baekeland — the world's first fully synthetic plastic, created through compression moulding that allowed for mass production. This manufacturing difference is central to why the two materials feel and behave differently in the hand, even when made from similar chemical bases. Read our full Bakelite & Catalin guide for a complete breakdown.

The Smell Test —
The Most Reliable Difference

The single most reliable way to distinguish Faturan from Bakelite is by rubbing the bead between your palms for 10–15 seconds and smelling immediately.

Faturan produces a warm, rich, resinous amber fragrance — distinctive and unmistakeable. Many describe it as ancient, organic, almost like incense. This scent is not just a quality indicator — it is one of the most beloved qualities of the material among daily users, and one that deepens with age and use.

Bakelite produces a milder phenolic or chemical scent — often described as slightly medicinal. It is present but far less striking. Modern acrylic imitations sold as Bakelite produce no scent at all — this is the first and clearest sign of an imitation.

"If you have smelled genuine Faturan once, you will never confuse it with Bakelite again. The scent alone tells you everything about the material's Ottoman heritage."

Which Should You Choose?

Choose Faturan if you want the very best

You value warmth, scent and patina above all. You are a serious collector or want a piece that will become more extraordinary with each passing decade. You are buying for a truly significant occasion. See our complete Faturan guide for everything you need to know about this extraordinary material.

Choose Bakelite if you want outstanding quality at a more accessible price

You want exceptional daily use quality without the Faturan premium. You prefer a slightly lighter feel. You want a wider range of colours. You are building your collection and want to start with a serious piece. Read our Bakelite & Catalin guide to understand the full range of options.

A Note on Imitations

The prayer bead market is flooded with modern acrylic resin sold as both Faturan and Bakelite. These imitations may photograph well but are immediately distinguishable in person — no scent, lighter weight, no warmth to the touch, and colours that appear flat and lifeless rather than deep and luminous.

At Luxury R Visible we are completely transparent about what we sell. If you have any questions about the materials in our collection, our team is always available to help.
