How to Tell if Your Amber
Prayer Beads Are Genuine

By Luxury R Visible  ◆  Buyer's Guides  ◆  5 min read

The amber prayer bead market is unfortunately full of imitations — plastic copies, pressed amber, and synthetic resin sold as genuine Baltic or Dominican Amber. If you have purchased what you believe to be a genuine amber tasbih, or if you are considering buying one, these five tests will give you a definitive answer in minutes — all at home, with no specialist equipment.

At Luxury R Visible, we stock only genuine verified Baltic and Dominican Amber, sourced directly through our worldwide craftsmen network. Read our full Baltic Amber guide to understand exactly what genuine amber is and how it is formed.

Five Home Tests for
Genuine Amber

  • 1
The Salt Water Float Test — Most Reliable Dissolve one cup of table salt in two cups of warm water. Drop a single bead in the solution. Genuine amber floats. Plastic sinks. Glass sinks. Pressed amber (fragments compressed together) usually sinks. This is the single most reliable home test — no equipment required, result in under 30 seconds. If your supposed amber beads sink in saturated salt water, they are not genuine amber.
  • 2
The UV Light Test — Most Dramatic Hold the bead under a UV blacklight torch. Genuine amber fluoresces. Baltic Amber glows a soft blue-green. Dominican Amber glows a vivid, striking blue — one of the most breathtaking natural phenomena in gemology. Plastic and most synthetic resins show no fluorescence or show a very different colour. If you own a UV torch, this test is instantly confirmatory.
  • 3
The Warmth Test — Most Practical for Daily Use Close your fist around a bead for 30 seconds then open immediately. Genuine amber warms noticeably faster than glass or most plastics — this exceptional thermal property is one of amber's most beloved qualities for daily dhikr and one of the primary reasons serious users choose it above other materials. It also explains why amber prayer bead gifts are so prized.
  • 4
The Weight Test — Quickest Check Hold the beads in your palm and assess their weight honestly. Genuine amber is remarkably light — lighter than glass, lighter than most resins, noticeably lighter than stone. This lightness combined with warmth is the signature feel of genuine Baltic Amber prayer beads and what makes them ideal for extended daily dhikr. Very heavy amber-coloured beads are almost certainly not genuine amber.
  • 5
The Inclusion Test — For Collector Pieces Examine any inclusions under a magnifying glass. Genuine inclusions look natural and three-dimensional — insects, plant matter and air bubbles appear to float within the amber at different depths. Fake inclusions in cheap imitation amber appear flat, two-dimensional, or suspiciously symmetrical. A genuine prehistoric insect trapped in amber is irreproducible by any manufacturing process on earth.

⚠️ Do not use the hot needle test on prayer beads. It permanently damages the surface and is completely unnecessary given the above methods. The salt water and UV tests together are more than sufficient to confirm genuine amber with confidence.

Baltic vs Dominican —
Does the Origin Matter?

Both Baltic and Dominican Amber are genuine fossilised tree resin — both pass all five tests above. The differences are about age, clarity, colour and price rather than authenticity. Baltic Amber is approximately 44 million years old; Dominican Amber is younger at 15–45 million years but typically far clearer and more likely to contain spectacular prehistoric inclusions.

"Genuine amber — whether Baltic or Dominican — has a warmth, lightness and depth of colour that no photograph fully captures. Once you hold real amber, imitations become immediately obvious."
