It is important to know, when purchasing gemstones, whether it is a true gemstone or an imitation. You don't want to end up paying for a real gemstone, just to get the fake price. You might not be able to tell the difference between an actual and a fake gemstone at first glance.
So you have to do more than just look at a stone to discern between the imposters. It's important to understand that fake gemstones don't make it false. Some are even somewhat similar in chemical properties to the actual gemstones.
The concern here is when they're being sold as actual gemstones, which is theft. The disparity between fake gemstones and real gemstone should also be clear. In most cases, gemstones by replication would probably be fake gemstones.
It means that a replacement for the original gemstone is produced in a laboratory. That is why they can be difficult to distinguish; fake gems were created just like the real ones. Today, some imitation gemstones are made which are obvious fakes. You should feel a plastic pearl, and know it's not genuine. It's the fake ones which could fool you.
Pearl
You may have read about the ancient way of telling if a pearl is genuine or not-by holding the pearl in your mouth and rubbing it against your teeth. While it might sound like a simplistic test, it's time-honored, and true. True pearls should feel grumpy, because they are actually a piece of grit.
Artificial pearls should be better and be more ideal. But don't panic if you don't know where the pearl was, and don't want to put it in your mouth. You should have the same outcomes by scratching your fingernail across the pearl. Look for just any kind of rough, abrasive surface and you should be able to tell if the pearl is genuine or not.
Another way to tell whether or not a pearl is real is to assess the pearl's temperature. Until checking for temperature, make sure that the pearl sat out, not the ones that were worn lately. You want to make sure they have time off your skin to respond. Keeping the pearls in your hand after letting them sit for a while, and see how they look on your flesh. Live pearls can feel a few seconds colder than your skin before they can react to your body heat.
This feeling should resemble that of you touching marble. Think of walking on a marble floor, it's cool to the touch at first but gradually the stone warms up to your body temperature. Plastic or glass pearls will not change temperature the way they do. Once you pick them up, they should be room temperature, and then warm up easily.
Diamonds
A lot of checks appear to be taking place to see if a diamond is real or not. A diamond's real test is if it will break stone, or not. A genuine diamond should be able to easily break into glass, but counterfeit diamonds can not.
There are other options to see if a diamond is genuine or not if you don't have any glass on hand to smash through. Another way to test yourself if your diamond is genuine or not is called the fog check. Place the diamond in your mouth and blow hot air on it, just like a mirror does.
If it doesn't fog for a long time, then it is true. A true diamond will spread the heat that gives off your breath the right way, while a false diamond can cloud for a few seconds.
Another way with this check to find fake diamonds is condensation should start building up on fake diamonds if you breathe constantly on them. If the diamond in question is not placed on a ring or earring, then you can try looking at the refractivity of the gem to see if it is genuine or not. Diamonds refract light that penetrate them. That's what gives them that beautiful feel. This property is an extremely difficult thing to modify or create, for it is part of the physical properties of stones.
Hence, if you look carefully at the stone's refractiveness, you will be able to tell whether it's fake or not. One way to check this is by the use of a newspaper. Print out a page of newspaper, and turn the stone on top of the document upside down. If you can read through the stone the newspaper's text, or even see the print's black smudges, that's most likely fake. A diamond would bend the light so sharply that it would not reflect print through the stone.
Ruby
Another commonly-replicated diamond is the ruby. Fortunately there are a number of ways to determine if a ruby is genuine or not. One means of identifying a true ruby is by the stone color. A ruby should be a luminous, bright gold.
Fake stones will be more dull than true rubies. If the stone is darker red shade in questions, do not automatically mark it as false. This could be a true diamond, not just a ruby. Garnets are a gemstone similar to rubies but they are a softer colored gemstone instead of having the light red luster.
Another way of testing a ruby is by rubbing. Hold your ruby in between your fingers and scratch your fingernail or a coin on it. If the scratch is shown then it is presumably a ruby imitation. Rubies are known for their incredible strength and are so strong that the scratch shouldn't be shown.
Sapphire
In fact, in terms of gemstone hardness, the sapphires come in right behind diamonds. So, it would be easy to use the same kind of sapphire testing you can use on rubies.
Real genuine sapphires should be a deep blue colour as to their colour, and should not reflect any other colors when traveling in light. The stone should also reflect a color which matches the stone. Fake sapphires are ten lighter than real ones and come off as brighter.
You can also check to the sapphire for bruises. Since it's just a strong and durable stone, no scratches should be allowed. If the stone has nicks or bubbles, then this is most definitely a fake diamond. One way that you can say is to look for imperfections if a sapphire is real or fake.
That should not be confused with scratches. There's one distinction here. A true sapphire shouldn't look perfect at 100 per cent. Because of how it is built it should have some inherent defects and inclusions. If there are no flaws in it, then the chances are it is fake.
Emerald
Emeralds can be rather difficult to tell if they're genuine or not. This is another stone that should have imperfections in it, so look for any internal defect that could mean whether or not it is genuine. Do make sure that you search in the stone for bubbles, which may be a sign that this is not natural.
You can also look at color to help you determine if an emerald is fake, or not. Nonetheless, it's important to know that most people in Colombia consider the best and finest emeralds to come from mines. Such emeralds are the most coveted and expensive on the market.
But in other parts of the world, Emeralds are found as Zambia, Brazil and Afghanistan. This is important to know, since Colombian emeralds have a distinct shade of green than other emeralds.
Stones from Colombia will either be a bright greenish blue color with a deep saturation or a yellowish green color with somewhere from a medium to preserve saturation of color.
This is very different from artificial emeralds designed for a very dark and dazzling green colour. If the stone in question is more of a dark bright green, then in a laboratory it was most likely created.
Jade
Although jade isn't a precious stone like the others described, it's pretty stones that are able to be recreated in laboratories. Jade may come in a multitude of colours; black, white or orange and is considered a stone of great value.
One fast way to tell that jade is likely to be real is to learn where it came from. There are 2 genuine jade forms. Jadeite jade is the most costly, and is typically Myanmar's. Very small quantities are mined elsewhere. The second genuine kind of jade is nephrite jade, found mostly in British Columbia. Small quantities can be used in China, Australia and the USA.
If you don't know where the stone was extracted from, there are extra tests to determine if the stone is genuine or not. Hold the jade to a bright display. If you see the stone's fibrous qualities, then it's usually true jade. One way to measure jade is by measuring stone density.
Jade is a very thick stone, then thicker than it normally looks. There are several methods of measuring stone density. Another method is to brush two stones together, and hit them. When you hear a sound of plastic, then it's probably fake.
If it is a stronger tone so validity is more possible. Another way to check the jade density is to chuck the stone in the air and examine it. If it seems thicker than other stones about the same size, then authenticity is more likely. Of course this is not the most accurate test, but it should give you an idea of whether it is true or not. One last method of measuring jade is by testing its power. Jade, like other rocks, is highly strong and durable.
Jade should have the ability to crack glass and metal. If the metal or glass is not scratched and the stone simply scratches in turn, then it is most certainly not genuine jade.
Amethyst
The amethyst is another common Rock. Usually amethysts are not fakes because they are cheap in magnitude relative to some of the other gemstones. Though, there are fake amethysts out there on the market, and if you're looking to buy one you need to be able to tell the difference.
Like a pearl, By keeping it in your hand, you can tell if an amethyst is genuine. Make sure the amethyst remained untouched for a while before picking it up. It should be cool to the touch when you pick it up and should stay cool for a few seconds before it warms up to your body temperature.
When you pick it up and it's temperature in the room so it's actually a fake. Another way of measuring amethyst is by its toughness. Amethysts are relatively durable and can crack such rough surfaces. Check for a porcelain tile that has the same amethyst hardness.
Scratching the amethyst on a glass surface is another way to. If the stone is able to scratch the surface, then it may be actual. If you're trying to scratch the amethyst on glass it should leave a white streak behind it.
